Summer Lovin’: Makeup to Beat the Heat

Want makeup with ease and effortlessness? “Summer is a great time to simplify your makeup routine,” says Rupert Kingston, founder of Delilah, “just think about using a few key products in a different way to achieve that summer time glow.”

Place right along your upper lashline, between your actual lashes, from the outer edges (not the waterline) inwards towards the nose, finishing roughly above the pupil. “This will create the optical illusion that your lashes are much thicker than they really are,” says Trish McEvoy, “and you can’t ‘see’ the makeup, just bolder looking lashes.” Since turning 50 this is the only way I can wear eyeliner without looking like I’m in drag. Try it with one of these guaranteed indelible liners that won’t budge once applied or leave a print on your upper eyelid (my pet hate). Trish McEvoy Intense Gel Eyeliner; Hourglass Mechanical Gel Eyeliner; or Charlotte Tilbury Rock ‘N’ Kohl in Bedroom Black.

JOGB TRICK: Using the index finger of your free hand, lift up the eyelid so you can see clearly between the lashes and gently fill in the gaps. Often called “tight-lining” by makeup artists, everyone over 40 should try this trick.

DRESS IT UP FOR EVENING? Keep to the same technique but go for a fatter liner, using a crayon that works like a smudgy smoke instead. I love By Terry 3-in-1 Multi Task Liner, in 10 fabulous smoky shades. Dot the crayon in two places between your outer lashes then rub it in with your fingers. Done!

KINDA HELPS IF YOU… Always prime your entire eyelid to create a neat eye contour that instantly evens out skin tone, veins, patches of pigmentation and reduces oiliness. Press in Trish McEvoy Eye Base Essentials or bareMinerals Prime Time Eyelid Primer.

A perfect tailored arch, balmed into position, totally opens up your face, yet it’s amazing how many of us will focus on our lashes and less on our brows. But, they’re just as key as it’s all about definition, especially as we’re all getting older and hairs become more sparse and faded in colour.

TRY THIS A daily application of Trish McEvoy Brow Mascara Long Wear is one step not to miss. It’s one of the easiest, less coated brush and hence less heavy-looking brow mascaras around, so get into the routine of coating your lashes first, then coat your brows (different product obviously). “Use the colour to mimic nature by brushing strokes in the direction your hairs grow to build up the brow,” says Trish. (Love her!) I also rather love Elizabeth Arden Statement Brow with a great fat brush that doesn’t leave too much product on the hairs.

I am a huge fan of creamy, multi-purpose lip and cheek colours (in case you haven’t noticed) because it’s an easy, cohesive makeup look: a nice bit of matchy-matchy colour that’s classy and elegant.

JOGB FAVES I’m always a sucker for the effortless Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks, that gives more staying power than many creams, but do love the new limited edition Bobbi Brown Glow Stick in Suntan, that’s a bit more glowy. Or choose a classic. NARS The Multiple, from the new Charlotte Gainsbourg collection, suits all skins or Stila Convertible Color, which I just can’t live without.

MY CHEAT! For fresh glowing cheeks, after you have applied your favourite lipstick, kiss your fingers and dab a little colour onto the apples of the cheeks – the lipstick will give a gorgeous sheen to the cheeks. I love: the classic Giorgio Armani Rouge d’Armani Lasting Satin Lip Colour in Blush; definitely a bareMinerals Gen Nude Radiant Lipstick in Love; and I’ve recently thrown in the fab balmy, glossy Clinique Chubby Plump & Shine Liquid Lip Plumping Gloss in ‘Normous Nude, that I use more towards the tops of my cheekbones to highlight too. EASE…ZEEEEE

Give your skin an easy glow. Think fresh-faced, healthy English summer, rather than a full-on luxury tan (so very last year). “Focus bronzer across the bridge of the nose and top of the forehead which adds an innocence to it,” says Terry Barber. New bronzers to fall in love with include MAC Extra Dimension Skinfinish Bronzer in Fruity Juicy, Guerlain Terracotta Sun Trio Bronzing Contouring Palette, and Clarins Sunkissed limited edt Bronzing & Blush compact.

TRY THIS Grab a sculpting brush, sweep in a C shape from the temple around the side by the ears and under the cheekbone to give a natural lift. Try the super soft RealTechniques by Sam & Nic Point XL, with artificial hairs so it’s vegan too (my eldest daughter claimed it!)
