GET SET, GLOW: glossy summer-ready skin

As your archetypal autumn redhead, I confess I don’t ‘do summer’ well. The idea of exposing very fair skin in the sun just isn’t going to happen! I can’t do it! Mind you I will brag here that, as a result, I do have an impressively youthful chest that has barely seen daylight and defies my 52 years! But, I do like to ‘GLOW’!

So … come the evening, a bit of bare skin (or a lot) – whether fair or dark – suits having a glossy, sexy, illuminating sheen. That’s because actually it’s the texture and feel of our skin that matters way more than the colour.

I say embrace your natural skin tone and work with it, for healthier looking skin that makes you feel confident, sexy and desirable.

BRUSH ON GOLD Make all skin shapely with a bronzer

Choose a kabuki make-up brush to apply bronzer. Add contours and complement a highlighter by sweeping a layer of powder into the hollows of your cheeks, just under the cheekbone. This will naturally accentuate the cheekbones, with or without a highlighter on top. New ones include, Nars Sunwashed Diffusing Bronzer, a light, buildable compact in four matte shades; St.Tropez 3-in-1 Bronzing Powder, a palette of three shades that pretty much suits all skins; and the golden Guerlain Terracotta Chic Tropic (see below). Or check out the clever Vita Liberata Trystal Pressed Self Tanning Bronzing Minerals in Bronze that actually contains a little DHA – the active ingredient in a self-tanner – to create a lasting contour that stays put for days.

DON’T FORGET Always focus colour on those areas where the sun would naturally hit your face (and naturally tan) the most: forehead, bridge of the nose and across the cheeks.

BEAM WITH A CREAM Make all skin sexier with a highlighter.

Use a skin finishing product such as a glimmering highlighter, along the length of your limbs, blending in with fingers or a tanning mitt. Try Madame LA LA Tan Bronzing Ball, a shimmering solid golden bronzing balm that blends easily onto nose, cheeks, eyes and lips, plus collarbone, arms and legs; Fake Bake Tinted Body Glow; or Laura Geller Easy Illuminating Stick in Gilded Honey, a gorgeous golden creamy stick that’s great to pack for weekends away.

Oil-based formulas give a gorgeous sheen. I love the new Votary Hydrating Body Oil at, with bergamot, mandarin and eucalyptus in peach oil, that smells so good. “For a super highlighted look, I like to use a small amount of highlighter on a mitt and sweep product over limbs,” says Emma Kotch, St Tropez ambassador. “Layer it up over the collarbone, shoulders and shins. This is my favourite trick for my celebrity clients as it picks up beautifully under flash photography.”

My late night sexy trick: add a couple of drops of Cover FX Radiance Drops to a moisturiser for an ageless radiant and healthy glow that flatters all skin tones.

ADD A LUMINOUS GLOW in day time just by using a super high factor sunscreen. My fave is La Roche Posay Anthelios XL SPF50+ at It’s moisturising, making it great under makeup or alone. It also adds a fabulous sheen, is a great broad-spectrum UVA/UVB photostable protection for sensitive skins, non-greasy and no visible whiteness (Just his lovely sheen) helps prevent sun-induced pigmentation and dark spots (either from pregnancy or just photosensitization).
