TOP 10 WAYS TO TRY TO FIGHT FRIZZ

frizzy-hair-solutions

Frizzy hair is just the bane of my life – especially as hair ages, becomes brittle and greys.

Come rain or shine, whatever the weather: and apparently, I’m not alone, as frizz accounts for more than 65% of our hair woes. Are you with me on this?

Here are the top 10 ways to fight frizz according to celebrity hairdresser Ken O’Rourke, who is adored not only by me, but by A-listers Amy Adams, Mariah Carey, Kristen Stewart and Rachel McAdams.

“I used to have frizzy hair myself, so I know first hand what works.”

TOP TEN WAYS TO FIGHT FRIZZY HAIR

1

Best DIY style trick for summer frizz

“I love this effect. Dissolve 1/4 of a pack of rock salt (250g) in a jug of hot water so it looks cloudy, top it up with cold water and stir, then pour over freshly washed hair as the last rinse. Leave to naturally for a sexy, cool, urban beach look. Buy Westlab Himalayan Salt, £4.9 for 1kg.

2

Best blow-dry tip

“Wait until your hair is just 5% damp before blow-drying.” How do you know says I? “Imagine you’ve just walked outside on a winter’s day and your head feels cold like ‘oh my hair’s still damp’ – that much, no more”.

3

The best frizz styler

“It’s gotta be oil. Unlike serum that sits on the surface, oil gets absorbed by hair and is much easier to give control. Apply to wet hair, one drop to start with and build up gradually, and massage over the outer layers to reduce the fuzz (as this hair gets the most damage from the elements).” Avoid your hairline and around the face, that’s when it starts to look greasy.

4

Get more control

Hair doesn’t have to be super smooth, but you can control frizz by just running over the top layers with tongs. The outer layers have the majority of the frizz; focus here and you’re done.

5

Love your natural texture

Own your frizz! “I love it when my clients want to embrace their natural texture. The less you try to make your hair look great, the sexier it looks. Your hair is who you are so why change it? I tell my clients to learn small tricks and quick fixes as well as picking the right products that work for their hair texture.

6

Stop the heat

If you constantly straighten your hair to tame frizz then back off: all you’re doing is damaging it. Instead, concentrate on smoothing it with a leave-in moisturising treatment such as Charles Worthington Moisture Seal Hair Healer Leave-In Conditioner, £5.99, instead to keep frizz at bay.

7

Cut back on shampooing

Wavy, curly, frizzy hair look better next day and even the day after that, as natural oils help tame your style. Plus it saves time and money too.

8

The ultimate cut

Keep hair longer, below your shoulders, with blunt ends and long layers. The blunt ends will help to control the craziness of the layers as curls and coarse need weight to prevent them going AWOL.

9

Daily Control

Avoid brushing or touching your hair throughout the day. This will break up the curls, which cause it to frizz. Use a small amount of cream or oil to help reduce static.

10

Do an overnight treatment

Apply Aveda Dry Remedy Moisturizing Oil, £21.50, and leave it on all night to allow the product to sink in overnight for an intense burst of control for flyaways and fuzz. Alternatively, try a bit of olive oil – mixing in four drops of pure lavender essential oil for a nice soothing scalp remedy.
