To be honest, I don’t really want my foundation to last all day… but then again, to not slide off too quick? Yes please.
I’m not a heavy wearer of makeup as a rule – but with age, I do need my foundation to help even out my skin tone – it just does erase a few years. However, as being over 50, I seriously need to prep and prime my skin within an inch of my life, as the slightest ounce of powder renders my mature skin just a bit too dry and cakey. Plus I’m more into being ‘real’ – SO, when I test out makeup, whether for face, eyes or lips etc…it’s got to look ‘real’ – like second-skin: the better side of me.
So when it comes to big occasions, a wedding maybe (got one of those coming up, right?), a big birthday, mega night out, or a very long day to get through without a mirror on hand… nothing is more useful than a foundation designed to sty where you put it!
Here’s my pick of the best new long-lasting, all-day foundations, that can easily double up as concealer too. Check out NARS and Bobbi for the best range of colours to suit a variety of skin tones too….
Nars Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation, £31 in 33 shades
1 For Medium to Full cover Five stars for the shade match-ability alone with 33 shades! We like this one stippled on the skin (esp as Jo hates too heavy a cover), pretty transfer and sweat resistant, doesn’t come off on the phone either. The novel Skin Optimizing Complex with plant extracts is set to make skin more supple and smooth to boost blending, improve cover without a mask-like effect.
Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Gel Touch Foundation SPF25, £43 in 9 shades
2 For Light to Medium cover Only just my ultimate handbag must-have foundation (it’s in there right now), a buildable base that works well in pix but also in everyday life for meetings and going out. My skin is so ridiculously fair – but I still can wear the 020 shade (not even the fairest!)
Laura Geller Cover Lock Cream Foundation, £28 in 9 shades
3 For Serious cover We’re talking full on coverage here, seriously pigmented to help cover major blemishes, scars and even coats tatoos. Yet, thanks to hydrating hyaluronic acid, it’s very creamy and smooth enough not to crease, crack or settle too much into fine lines and wrinkles. This also contains antioxidant vitamins in a ‘PrimeLock’ environmental formula to create a protective barrier and helps protect from UV and pollution – could do with more shades in the mix however.
No7 Aqua Perfect Cushion Foundation SPF15, £17.50 in 8 shades,
4 Super Light cover Hot off the press, this is No7’s first foray into a compact cushion foundation using a mesh to help prevent spills and limit the amount of cover so you don’t overdo it. Lightweight with buildable coverage, skin still looks like skin. Definitely don’t get as much actual product in this style compact however and not ideal for those with spots as they are less hygienic to apply than a pump.
Bobbi Brown Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation SPF15, £31 in 30 shades
5 Medium cover No caking or creasing in the folds with this thanks to a clever new formula using a high-speed ‘cold fusion’ process that binds oil control with colour pigments in a skin softening gel base. All together this lighter texture is crazily moisturising and light-reflective, so skin stays matte but not flat; seriously sweat-proof too: love this applied with a Beauty Blender sponge.
