Foundation Wardrobe! How to find the perfect base for you.

Switch foundation for Summer

Even though I am skin obsessed (well hair too), foundation is my makeup holy grail. Since turning 50, I never go a day without it. You might look at me close up and say “can’t see anything”… at which point I may have to hug you! Choosing which foundation to wear is a bit like choosing what clothes you’re going to put on right? Too heavy a coat and you’ll regret it by midday; too light and you’ll wish you had worn a cardi! “Think about your skin texture as you do your clothing,” suggests Terry Barber MAC Head of makeup artistry. “Do you want dewy skin with a bit of blush showing through (yes please), or something a bit flatter and more monochrome?”

“I always recommend choosing foundation for the way YOU want your skin to look depending on your day, what you’re wearing, where you’re going and how old you’re feeling.” Foundation is ageing, fact! “That’s why young girls love it so, but not so much women.” And even ‘who you’re seeing’, says I. After all,  a caked face of foundation is way less kissable!

THE BEST DRESSED FOUNDATIONS to suit your style and skin.

MAC, Shiseido, Bobbi Brown, YSL, Clarins, Giorgio Armani, Kat Von D

THE NEGLIGEE So sheer it’s not even called ‘a foundation’, MAC Next to Nothing Face Colour, £27 in 9 shades , is what’s known as a hybrid skin luminizing base (i.e. a perfect mix of skincare and makeup technology) that signals the return to tinted moisturiser. It’s a transparent veil of transparent gorgeousness that looks like your skin, only better. Nice! (A MAC sales assistant said how out of character this makeup base is for MAC, being so light, but that they’d love younger girls to embrace their skin more and not hide it away.

THE WORKOUT ONESIE Defined as ‘very water-resistant’, I adore Shiseido WetForce Sports BB 50+ Cream, £32 in three shades , because even though it’s effortless to apply, it gives full-on UV cover, and, like Lycra, makes skin look rather fit! More shades needed though I think!

THE LITTLE BLACK CARDI You’ll definitely want to keep this one in your bag for an extra layer when needed! I vow it’s been in mine since I first got my hands on one! Bobbi Brown Cushion Compact, £36 in 10 shades gives effortless light to medium cover without looking overtly made-up, and can stay put for up to 12 hours.

THE SILK SHIRT A luxurious shimmery texture that you can layer and dress up or down, YSL Touche Eclat Le Cushion, £40 eight shades, also comes with a double-sided sponge that gives you, even more, choice in the way you blend it to suit your skin. I like to use my fingers to be honest…

THE CASHMERE WRAP Just love the velvety texture of Clarins Pore Perfecting Mattifying Foundation, £28 in five shades that primes and smoothes fine lines and fills pores in one go. This is my go-to when I look tired and need a little extra cover.

THE CAMEL OVERCOAT Floor length, full cover, long lasting, with a beautiful finish, Giorgio Armani Powder Fabric Foundation SPF25, £40 in 15 shades  is your makeup equivalent to the most indispensable coat. With the same suspension of pigments as the fabulous Eye Tint – my favourite cream eyeshadow of all time that goes nowhere (more on that another time soon guaranteed) – this classic new long-wear foundation m.akes skin look flawless

THE TRENCH Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation 24-Hour Wear Full Coverage Transfer-Resistant Matte Finish, £27 in 30 shades will seriously defy whatever you plan for the night. Just one drawback. Much like a skin tattoo (in true Kat style) this everlasting formula can be tough to take off. Those in the know recommend using her deep cleansing oil (but it’s not in the UK yet!). Try the divine aroma and texture of Votary Cleansing Oil, £45 at, with rose geranium and apricot
